Lake Barkley is located in Southern Kentucky and Northern Tennessee. Cadiz, Kentucky is a popular destination for Lake Barkley visitors and is located in Lyon County, Kentucky. Lake Barkley is one of the premiere lake and nature preserves in the State of Kentucky.
In 1966 the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers were impounded and the dams were finished. This created Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake.The area located between them is known as The Land Between the Lakes. The Land Between the Lakes has become one of the premiere freshwater nature preserves in the U.S.
The area of Lake Barkley, Kentucky Lake, and Land Between the Lakes offers more than 170,000 acres and 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. The natural beauty of this area is a sight to behold.
Lake Barkley is approximately 134 miles long with a shoreline that measures over a whopping 1,000 miles. The Lake itself consists of over 58,000 surface acres of water at summer pool. North of the dam which creates Lake Barkley is a small canal linking it to Kentucky Lake. This connector allows Lake Barkley, Kentucky Lake, and The Land Between the Lakes to be one of the greatest freshwater complexes in the United States.
