Kentucky Lake is located in Southern Kentucky and Northern Tennessee. Eddyville and Calvert City, Kentucky are popular destinations for Kentucky Lake visitors and are located in Lyon and Marshall counties, respectively. Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley are two of the premiere lakes and nature preserves in the State of Kentucky.
Construction on Kentucky Dam took place from mid 1938 until fall 1944. The Tennessee River was impounded by Kentucky Dam and Kentucky Lake was finished. This created Kentucky Lake and later aided in the construction of Lake Barkley. The area located between these two lakes is known as The Land Between the Lakes. The Land Between the Lakes has become one of the premiere freshwater nature preserves in the U.S. when it was dedicated by John F. Kennedy 1964.
The area of Lake Barkley, Kentucky Lake, and Land Between the Lakes offers more than 170,000 acres and 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. The natural beauty of this area is breathtaking.
Kentucky Lake is approximately 184 miles long with a shoreline that measures close to 2,400 miles. Kentucky Lake itself consists of over 160,300 surface acres of water at summer pool. North of the dam which creates Kentucky Lake is a small canal linking it to Lake Barkley. This connector allows Lake Barkley, Kentucky Lake, and The Land Between the Lakes to be one of the largest freshwater preserves in the United States.
